Surge in Canadian Retailers Jumping on Alipay and WeChat Pay

Thanks to the surge in Chinese tourism, hundreds of brands and retailers across Canada are capitalizing on the rise of Chinese visitors by eagerly adding mainstream Chinese payment methods, Alipay and WeChat Pay, the preferred payment options in China.

Toronto, ON In 2018, Canada has seen an increase in Chinese tourism unlike any other group due in part to the Canada-China Year of Tourism and the general rise of interest in travelling abroad among the Chinese.  While in Canada, Chinese tourists enjoy tourist attractions, theatre, retail, restaurants and more. This makes them an important source of revenue for Canadian merchants, and Canadian sellers are adopting Chinese mobile payment solutions to meet this growing demand.

The digital economy is changing the way that consumers pay for their goods and services.  Alibaba Group is doing what it can to meet this rising demand.

“Globalization is one of Alibaba’s most critical long-term growth strategies. We are building the future infrastructure of commerce to realize a globalized digital economy where trade is possible for every country around the world,” said Daniel Zhang, CEO of Alibaba Group.

According to CBC News1, in 2018, China became the second largest source of visitors to Canada.

Another study conducted by Nielsen, in partnership with Alipay2, discovered that if given a choice, 90% of Chinese tourists would use mobile payment systems overseas. The whitepaper also revealed that the average spend per Chinese tourist on shopping was $762 US.

More and more merchants are now posting signs or online messages to proudly showcase the acceptance of WeChat Pay and Alipay as payment options.  Nobis is one of them.

“We are thrilled to offer preferred payment options to our Chinese customers,” said Cedric St. Louis, store manager of a Nobis clothing store. “Since then, we’ve not only seen a spike in Chinese consumer sales, but in referrals among Chinese customers who are happy to be able to pay on their own payment systems in Chinese dollars.”

SnapPay Inc. is the official Canadian representative of Alipay and WeChat Pay, the leading payment platforms in China.  SnapPay offers Canadian merchants the ability to accept Alipay and WeChat payments, which gives Chinese visitors the ability to pay in Chinese currency by using their preferred payment platform.

“We’re excited about our partnership with SnapPay because of the added convenience and enhanced experience it will bring to our Chinese customers,” said Cathy Price, Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort’s vice president of marketing.

According to Chris Renton, chief growth officer of SnapPay Inc., Canadian businesses need to adapt to the change in consumer demand. “Mobile payment brings tremendous new business opportunities to Canadian merchants. As AliPay and WeChat Pay technology becomes more prevalent in Canada, we have seen huge spikes in usage and spend volume in airlines, restaurants, retailers and even grocery stores,” he said. “With our mobile marketing and acceptance solutions we are the connection between Canadian merchants and the informed Chinese consumer looking for accommodations, entertainment or products they can purchase, using their preferred payment methods.”

SnapPay was founded in Mississauga, Ontario, in 2017 and is the fastest growing Alipay and WeChat Pay marketing and payment partner in Canada.
